St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Kingston celebrated World Book Day with a bang at the grand opening of their brand-new jungle-themed library.

Undeterred by the snow, many of the children came dressed as their favourite book characters, and joined Kingston Mayor Councillor Julie Pickering in an enthusiastic countdown before the new library was unveiled.

Although the pupils had chosen the theme, the design was kept secret from them throughout the project and there was “much excitement” when it was first revealed.

Jennifer in year 6 said: “The new library is a special place that makes you want to read more and enjoy books.”

A spokeswoman for the school said: “Surrounded by tropical greenery and watched over by jungle animals, children chose books and settled down to read them on tree-stump beanbags in the new seating area.

“The new library, including many new books, is the culmination of a year of fundraising by the school’s PTFA.

“It is wonderful to see the children enjoying the benefits.”
