Two men have died and five people have been taken to hospital after shops and flats caught fire in Tolworth.

London Fire Brigade was called to reports of the rooves of two shops and the above flats being alight in Tolworth Rise South at 4.55am.

Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters were sent, from New Malden, Surbiton, Kingston, Sutton and Wimbledon.

The five people sent to hospital suffered from smoke inhalation.

Loft conversions in two flats and the first floor of one flat were damaged.

The fire was under control at 7.44am; it is not yet known what caused it.

London Ambulance service was called just before 5am.

A spokesman said: "We sent four ambulance crews, our hazardous area response team and an incident response officer to the scene.

"We assessed five patients and took them to hospital. Sadly, two people were dead at the scene."
