A woman who interrupted a burglary in progress at a house in Claygate has been praised by police.

The woman heard an alarm go off at a house nearby while out in her front garden, just before 4pm on January 10.

She went over and saw two men dressed in black at the back of the house, and the back door had been smashed.

The video shows her confronting one of the men as they left, while he ran to a car.

She noted the car registration and called 999.

Despite searching the area, police were unable to find the car, but later that day officers from the Metropolitan Police stopped the vehicle in Brixton and arrested a man on suspicion of burglary.

He was interviewed and has been released under investigation.

Inspector Dee Fielding, from North Surrey CID, said: "This woman's brave actions, and prompt call to us, led to the arrest of a man suspected of burglary, and we are grateful to her for investigating when she heard the alarm sounding. It was a pleasure to meet her earlier this week, and thank her personally for her actions.

ā€œIā€™d always urge the public to make sure they are safe before deciding to get involved, and if you suspect a burglary in progress call us immediately on 999.ā€
