Kingston’s Korean Festival is coming to the Ancient Market Place on Saturday, September 16.
Celebrations will include a parade, traditional and contemporary dance, K-Pop music, folk games, paper flower and lantern-making workshops and costumes for children.
There will also be an exhibition in the Kingston Museum open until October, showing traditional Korean dress presented to children on their first birthday along with a table for the Doljabi ceremony.
In the ceremony, food and other objects are placed on the table, and the child chooses an item that captures their attention, in a tradition believed to predict aspects of the child’s future.
Kingston Council is sponsoring the event, which is run with the Korean British Cultural Exchange.
Councillor Andy Johnson-Creek, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Internationalism and Culture at Kingston Council, said: “I’m delighted that we’re welcoming back the successful Korean Festival for another year, this time it’s bigger and better than ever, with an exhibition on Korean culture at Kingston Museum running until October.
“We want Kingston to be designated the first London Borough of Culture and it’s events and celebrations like the Korean Festival that reinforce why our Royal Borough deserves the title.”
