An iconic Kingston department store is celebrating its 150th birthday, and the team is looking for help from the public.
Bentalls, in Wood Street, Kingston town centre, reaches the landmark anniversary on July 20, and is encouraging people to submit memories and artwork for a commemorative exhibition.
They want a local artist to design a logo for the celebration as well as a fashion illustration for use in store, on memorabilia and online.
On their website they also have a form for people to enter memories and stories of the store.
Hopefuls have until Monday (May 8) to submit their entries for artwork, but the online form for memories will remain open until much closer to the anniversary.
The store had a humble beginning, when Kingston resident Frank Bentall purchased a small drapery shop in 1867.
In 1935, the principal buildings were completed to a design by architect Maurice Webb, inspired by Christopher Wren’s work on Hampton Court in the 17th century.
Bentalls was bought by department store chain Fenwick in June 2001, and remains one of the largest retail centres in south west London.
