The denizens of Seething Wells have made it to the regional finals of the first-ever Britain Has Spirit awards, which could see the group win £1,000 for a street party.

But the real prize would be a win at national level, meaning a £25,000 award.

Seething Wells is competing against three other good causes in the London region including the Plumstead Make Merry, an outdoor festival that has taken place yearly since 1975.

Simon Tyrrell, from the Community Brain, said: “So many people give so freely of their time and of their talents, but sometimes money enables more people both to become involved and benefit from our activities. £25,000 is a truly enabling amount of money. That would allow us to deliver a step-change in our activities.”

The awards were launched by TV presenter Gabby Logan and Together Mutual Insurance in response to the company's research, which claimed nearly half of Britons did not feel they were part of a "neighbourly community".

Regional winners are automatically entered into a national vote. Visit britainhasspirit.com
