Several roads in Tolworth were left without power last night as the substation caught fire.
Surbiton firefighters tackled the “reasonably high flames” after they were called out at 8pm last night to the substation off Red Lion Road.
The crew spent an hour and a half dousing the fire before UK Power Networks isolated it.
A spokeswoman from UK Power Networks said: “UK Power Networks engineers have replaced a piece of underground equipment which had developed a fault, and caused a power cut to 313 customers in the Red Lion Road area last night.
“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
