A group that supports 100 children with severe learning disabilities through games and activities is searching for a home.

Non-profit Yorda Adventures, a community interest organisation, is running its summer activities from a scout hut in New Malden and is otherwise based at Dysart School in Surbiton.

But founder Laura Smyth hopes to find a stable home for her group.

She said: “We don’t have a permanent base for our year-round activities. It’s difficult because although we’re linked to Dysart many of the children with severe autism struggle with staying at a school.

“Dysart are brilliant and as accommodating as they can be, for our teenagers, they need big, physical activities going off-site and getting rid of more energy before they get home in the afternoon, which gives their parents a better break.

“It makes such a difference to mental health.

“If we found somewhere we would be really serious about getting the funds together and bringing a community asset back into use.

“There is some land near Devon Way youth centre [Chessington]. It is lying there not doing anything.”

Pupils from Shrewsbury House School recently raised £5,000 for Yorda Adventures by completing a sponsored run.
