Kingston's fatberg sewage repair works have finished in time for Christmas.
But they will be back again to deal with the damage caused by the 15 tonne conglomeration of fat, wet wipes in the drains sometime after late January 2014.
Kingston Council had threatened Thames Water with a fine over the long-running works if it did not stop work over the Christmas period.
The work has seen huge traffic queues and businesses complaining of reduced trade.
And in September the company had said it needed another five months to deal with 55 metres of a large sewer pipe beneath London Road in Kingston.
The Kingston fatberg was the first of a growing army of fatbergs discovered across London, including in Mitcham.
