Interview with Sarah MacDonald from “Little Sister Blue”

LSBAfter discussing favourite cheeses and how and when is best to eat them, I ask Sarah MacDonald a few questions about her band Little Sister Blue after her performance at the Market Square for K-Town Live.

The band started as just two artists, Sarah and Betty featuring vocals with guitar and cello, but as their work became more popular they brought in other instruments, producing a fuller sound that grabs the attention of the crowd. The final addition of a few bits of percussion “brings everything to life” says Sarah. Sunday provided another enjoyable and memorable performance from the folk band, and our interviewee certainly enjoyed it. “It was beautiful actually,” she says. “The sun came out and it was stunning.”

The band play a combination of original music written by Sarah and covers. “I like writing, but I also enjoy doing covers. I do them in a different way which gives people a false sense of security.” Sarah has a very easy manner with the audience, chatting and making jokes and generally keeping it light in between heart-kindling songs “about love, life, grief and happiness”. Though she once wrote a song about waiting for a bus, her original music is inspired by her family and she believes that it often comes from an internal conflict needing to be resolved.

“If I could make a life out of music I would but it’s too scary,” she explains. “It’s too scary a jump. I couldn’t just do this forever because then it will be like, ‘woah!’ I have to rely on this fun hobby, so it’s nice and I think I’ve got the balance.”

This charming group are currently working hard to get their new album, Above Below, off the ground. If you would like to support them, have a look at facebook.com/littlesisterblue, listen to some beautiful music, and make a pledge on their WeFund page, they only have 15 days left to reach their target.
