Firefighters were called to a fire at a Kingston nursery last night.

Seven fire engines raced to Hampden Road shortly after 10pm, after the building’s alarm alerted people nearby.

An investigation into the cause is underway, but the blaze is not being treated as suspicious, Kingston crew manager Brennan Healey said.

No one was hurt in the fire, which damaged 20 per cent of the single-storey building, plus 10 percent of the roof.

Mr Healey said: "Sterling work was done by crews from Kingston, Surbiton, and New Malden.

"If they didn’t work so hard they would have lost the whole building. It was touch-and-go."

The last crew left the scene at 1.22am.
