New Display at Windmill Museum

A brand new display has been installed at the Windmill Museum on Wimbledon Common. The new Wind Power Gallery was opened by the Mayor of Merton on Tuesday 23rd February, and brings up to date the story of how wind has been used for centuries to provide a source of power. The Mayor inaugurated the display by pressing the button to start the rotation of the vanes on a 3m high model of a modern wind turbine.

The museum is popular for school visits, where children can learn not just about the development of windmills and the grinding of corn, but also about rural crafts and local history. There is even a display of Scouting memorabilia commemorating the writing of part of ‘Scouting for Boys’ by Robert Baden-Powell in the mill cottage in 1908.

The Windmill Museum will open for the summer on Saturday 27th May, and is open on Saturday afternoons (2 till 5 p.m.) and on Sundays and Bank Holidays (11 a.m. till 5 p.m.).
