Surbiton High shows its support for women

By community correspondent Gaby Mills

On Monday 8th March, in aid of International Women’s Week – which began on Sunday 7th and ends on Saturday 13th – Surbiton High School’s Amnesty International club held a cake sale and petition signing.

The weather was in our favour, as although it was cold and extremely windy the sun was shining and many people were outside.

The members of the club generously donated both home-made biscuits and Tesco-bought cupcakes, and there were another two tables dedicated to the petition and letters.

The petition was in aid of better child-birth conditions for women in developing countries, as many women still die whilst delivering children.

The pre-written letters – which girls just had to sign – are going to be sent to high-ranking members of countries where women still do not have equal rights to men e.g. are not allowed to drive cars, own property etc.

Overall the sale raised over £25, which will be put towards stamps and envelopes. It was a great success, and very enjoyable for everyone involved.
