By Community Correspondent Axel Kemp Theatre is something that is often viewed as a sophisticated pastime – as humans we like to laugh, cry, be moved and be entertained by actors, but the invention of the television has unnecessarily restrained us to our sofas and armchairs. Many of us don’t seem to realise the wonders that can go on at the local playhouse.
There are many genres of theatre, so there is something for everyone: comedies, tragedies, musical theatre, agitprop and so on. Regardless of our interests, there is a play for everyone out there.
The West End of London is known as the capital of theatre, but there are many high quality performances at more local venues. The Epsom Playhouse, for example, showcases a variety of shows that are advertised locally; you may even recognise people from shops, restaurants and other services near you. Theatre is something that can be enjoyed by anyone.
A common criticism of theatre is the price – tickets can often be expensive for high-end shows. However, numerous programmes exist in order to make theatre affordable for everyone. The Night Less Ordinary scheme, for example, offers free tickets to selected plays to anyone under the age of 26.
Theatre can be enjoyed by anyone and it is definitely worth trying at least once – who knows, you might even like it!
