A teenage musician is to release a single in tribute to his school friend, who died after taking ecstasy earlier this year.

Brandon Billy, 17, recorded By My Side to raise money for the drugs awareness charity founded by Daniel Spargo-Mabb's parents following his death on January 20.

The song, which Brandon performed at a memorial service for 16-year-old Daniel at Archbishop Tenison's High School, will go on sale on Friday under the stage name Brandon Lewis.

The Year 13 student, who plays piano and sings on the track, wrote the song last year but thought the lyrics were fitting.

He said: "When Daniel died, for his memorial at school I thought it would be nice to sing that song because we didn't have any musical performances going on in that service.

"I thought the words could mean something as well, because it's a gospel song. It is about God being by your side and helping you through tough events.

"The teacher I told said it was a good idea because she thought it was amazing how the lyrics reflected the situation."

Your Local Guardian: Daniel Spargo-Mabbs

Daniel Spargo-Mabbs died in January after ecstasy caused his body to overheat

Brandon, who took GCSE drama alongside Daniel at Archbishop Tenison's, added: "It struck a chord with people.

"It was hard for me too because everyone around me was emotional and crying, but I thought I don't want to be crying in the performance. I thought I better keep it together and try to perform my best."

A teacher later suggested Brandon release the song, which he recorded at the school.

Brandon said: "I want to do this because the charity was set up for a good cause and I knew Daniel.

"Everywhere he went, all eyes were on him because he was the funniest person and the biggest character in the room."

Daniel's parents said they were moved by the song.

Mrs Spargo-Mabbs added: "We're so touched by the passion and commitment so many of Dan's friends are showing to making a difference somehow in memory of Dan."

The song will be available to download from iTunes, Google Play and Amazon.
