The views expressed by Lord Kenneth Jackson – RAF retired – are welcome and very true.
We have an obligation to look after those who served our country and the proposed care home for retired servicemen at Hampton Court is the least we could do to express our gratitude.
Simon Weston also spoke for many with his eloquent speech and his comments should be seriously considered by those who oppose the proposed development of the Jolly Boatman site.
We hear of a need for a “public inquiry”. This is a very expensive exercise, time-consuming and a favourite delaying tactic always adopted by those not prepared to accept a majority decision.
It is all very well hankering for a public enquiry, but who is going to foot the bill? Will the taxpayers of Elmbridge Council have to pay for this needless diversion? Or perhaps those who demand an inquiry will also be prepared to write out cheques.
Will these groups be prepared to accept the decision of the public inquiry if it goes against them? Or will they then appeal to House of Lords, or even take it to the European Court of Justice in the Hague? Where and when will it all stop?
