I find Councillor Kevin Davis’s recent tweet concerning Kingston residents’ opposition to a 21-storey tower block in the centre of Kingston appalling.

It sadly appears to reflect a more generally arrogant and dismissive attitude of the councillor to the views of the people he is meant to represent in this borough.

I recently contacted Coun Davis about the council’s policy for locating mobile phone masts.

Coun Davis’s replies were allusive, arrogant and reflective of an approach that seems to show complete disregard for real democracy.

The irony is that, while his reply included the comment “our job is to work for the whole community and take decisions as far as we see them for the benefit of the whole community”, in reality, he is not prepared to listen to what the community has to say, but instead makes a cheap political jibe at the people – of all political persuasions – who simply want to protect our historic market town.

He went on to say that, if I do not like what councillors do, “you have, as do all residents, the right to vote against them at the next election”.

Some kind of democracy, that – a say once every five years, while, in the meantime, our councillors do whatever they like.
