Ian Kirkpatrick questioned why bus services between Epsom and the Surbiton and Chessington areas are scarce, compared with those to Kingston (Bus blues, February 20).
The answer is that 50 years ago this April, Epsom and Ewell opted out of becoming part of the newly formed Greater London.
As a result, its residents and businesses do not contribute to the funding of Transport for London (TfL).
Indeed, for a location outside Greater London, Epsom is quite well served, with six TfL routes, including two from Kingston and Surbiton (406, 418), and two (166, 293) continuing to the hospital.
