With all the news about engineering work, price hikes and poor service on the trains, I feel a further key issue has been lost in the noise.
Surbiton station is rightly lauded as an architectural highlight for the borough – but up close I’m afraid it has lost much of its splendour.
Rust stains and graffiti mar the paintwork which, higher up, is peeling badly.
The walkway between Victoria Road and South Bank is in even worse nick: not only did South West Trains have to paint over racist graffiti last year but the key shortcut is frequently polluted with urine, dog muck and litter.
Better care should be taken of this landmark, not just for cosmetic reasons but to improve the customer experience.
