I think the principle of a 20 mph limit is excellent and should be applied throughout Kingston.
What surprises me is the reported police response that they do not have the resources to enforce.
I have pressed the police in the past to enforce the 20mph limit in Grove Ward and they told me they have a blanket policy not to issue any speeding tickets in these zones.
They will only enforce in 30mph areas. So, in declaring 20mph zones, Kingston is establishing speed free zones where motorists can drive as fast as they like providing they slow down when they enter a 30 mph area.
How do the council officials expect these zones to be self-enforcing? They should stand in Villiers Road or Maple Road, where the limits are totally ignored.
Unless the council and police agree to work together this initiative is a total waste of time.
