June Sampson may have missed Kingston during her long hospitalisation, but not as much as Kingston has missed her.

Her incisive critique of the new market upon her return puts eloquently into words what many of us have been saying for weeks.

It looks awful, is impractical as a market and lacks much of what made the old market such a joy to visit.

In addition, the project has been badly managed, is a waste of public funds and was late in its delivery.

I have asked why those that organise and run our market town lack direct representation from our market traders? I have also asked questions about the contract conditions and compensation for disruption to stall holders.

The silence is deafening.

Declan Terry; Kingston

As an architect, I have tried hard to like the transformed market, but June Sampson’s incisive letter (Painful sight, July 4) has brought me to my senses.

Centuries of bustling tradition have been carelessly abandoned in a sterile attempt to produce a tourist attraction that will fail.

It is, I am afraid, a disaster. As the new stalls are on permanent foundations and are plumbed into water and drainage, they can never be moved.

Brian Godding; Kingston

If June Sampson says that Kingston’s revamped market is a painful sight, it must be true – and it is.

The very nature of the consultation process and the use of consultants was a waste of money.

There have been several previous and smaller make-overs of the market place, but this one beggars belief.

The thumbs down from June Sampson says it all.

Nigel Jackman; Hook

What a joy to see the byline of June Sampson once again.

Her opinions on the market place show that the sparkle remains undimmed by her appalling misadventure.

Michael Davison; Kingston
