'Look Out For'

Mark Foker By Mark Foker »

I was just looking at my last two reviews and I do seem to use the phrase ‘Look out for’ rather a lot. So, I’m thinking of introducing a FOKER’s ‘Look out for’ movie moment in my next reviews.

Changing the subject completely here’s some movies to put in your diary. Universal Pictures Mamma Mia (July 10) and a couple of blockbuster sequels - The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Aug 8) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Aug 22)….Can’t wait!
Hope to be reviewing these soon.

Now then, JUST FOR FUN I’d like get some feedback on the ultimate top 10 Movie Tunes. Not necessarily theme tunes, they could be just great songs used in films it should spark some good arguments!

I’ll give you my top 10, none of which include Will Smith…funny that!

1. “Stuck in the middle with you” (Stealers Wheel)– Reservoir Dogs
2. “Stand by me” – (Ben E King) - Stand by Me
3. “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Queen) - Wayne's World
4. Mrs Robinson” (Simon & Garfunfel) – The Graduate
5. “Misirlou” (Dick Dale) - Pulp Fiction, opening credits
6. “Sympathy for the Devil” (The Rolling Stones) Fallen, closing credits
7. “The Power of Love” (Huey Lewis & The News) Back to the Future
8. “Twist & Shout” (The Beatles) Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
9. “Windmills of your Mind” (Noel Harrison) The Thomas Crown Affair
10. “Don’t Stop me Now” (Queen) – Shaun of the Dead... it’s just a great moment beating the zombie Winchester Landlord in time to the music!

Can you do any better?

Lindsay, thanks for your comment but I'm afraid you have no class...Windmills of your Mind is a classic and it may show my age but the film starred Steve McQueen the King of Cool. Funny enough Easy Rider was on my original list...and talk about showing your age pal! Caberet...a bit camp and don't think the others are in the same league. But as i am trying to compile the ultimate list I think Born to be Wild should be there somewhere.
Keep um coming. O yeah! you last comment...Foker is of Dutch origin not German.

Lindsay, thanks for your comments and your wee quiz question….
"There's two things I hate...... and the Dutch!" name that movie?
I think you will find that the line is spoken by Michael Caine as Nigel Powers in Goldmember, it goes:
‘There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.’
Eat my shorts!!!!

How about Bad Moon Rising- American Werewolf in London, when he's first changing into the werewolf?

American Werewolf in London. Great film. I particularly like it for the award winning special effects for the scene where David changes for the first time. No CGI in site.A couple more good songs from that movie. 'Blue Moon' Sam Cooke and 'Moondance' Van Morrison.

Right, my top ten movie/music moments (in no particular order):

01: "if you leave me now" by Chicago, during a shoot out in Three Kings

02: "Pretty Women" by Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman in Sweeney Todd, a terrific and tense moment in the film

03: "Wise Up" by Aimee Mann in Magnolia, a totally bonkers concept having the whole cast sing this, but it somehow works!?

04: "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly during the shoot out in Manhunter (the much better version of Red Dragon)

05: "Everybodys Gotta Learn Sometime" by Beck in the opening scenes of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

06: "Live and Let Die" by Guns N Roses in Grosse Pointe Blanc, the way the music changes as he enters the supermarket, to an easy listening version of the track is hilarious and often overlooked!

07: "Colours" by Donovan, in the film Rules of Attraction, when Sean and Lauren meet.

08: "The Killing Moon" by Echo and The Bunnymen in the opening scene of Donnie Darko, great track, made me realise that not all songs in the 80's were pure cheese.

09: "Chaiyya Chaiyya" not sure who it is by, but its the opening track of Inside Man.

10: "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd (not the effing scissor sisters!), in The Departed.

Col...interesting choices. it's not what you would normally expect. I also had 'In -A-Gadda-Da-Vida' on my original list and I also preferred Manhunter. I thought Brian Cox made a good 'Hannibal',not necessarily better than Hopkins but totally different. I may also add 'Live & let die' to the ultimate list.Grosse Pointe Blank, another great movie. Isn't the supermarket scene where the whole place gets blown to pieces?

Your top ten is pretty similar to mine dad..uh I mean Mark...*cough*...But I would squeeze "Hit the road Jack" From 'The Dream Team' on the list. Classic! Also "Afternoon Delight" from Anchorman is a great moment!

Wendy, you should know me better than that! ps. the tomatoes are wilting, despite the bloody weather up here in arkengarthdalewintonland.
Col's choices are quite eclectic. I too agree Manhunter better movie, but the ending was not true to the book. Red Dragon's ending was and Ed Norton's up there with Depp and Roth in my book. How about the Robert Duval / helicopter attack scene in Apocalypse Now,Wagner, The Ride of the Valkyries?

Col, says...
3:07pm Fri 18 Jul 08

I think Manhunter has the whole 80s feel to it that makes it great. Red Dragon isn't bad, but I dunno, I prefer Manhunter for some reason.

Can't believe I didn't put "The End" from Apocalypse Now in my original list!

And yes, the supermarket scene, it gets blown up later. The guns'n'roses moment is when Martin first walks in there wondering what has happened to his childhood home, hilarious scene!

laurie - if you have 'hit the road jack'(great sing-a-long song when you're in the car) from Dream Team, how about 'Walk the Dinosaur'? by Was not Was.
Lindsay - Damm!!!Apocalypse Now, The Ride of the Valkyries? definately got to go on the list.
Col - Got home last night after seeing Hellboy 2 and my wife and daughter were watching Sweeney Todd. Not seen it before but see what you mean about the 'Pretty Woman' song. I really liked the film. thought it shot very well in that drained colour look.

I deliberated over The End too! Laurie- hit the road jack- a def! Its a great track to run to, try it- the beat is just right for a reasonable pace.
Laurie- aside- have rewritten and Alf now has a trenchcoat! Ta!

Got another one, was watching Clerks 2 last night and theres some great use of music in that.

The dance scene featuring that song by The Jackson Five, think its "ABC".

Also, the bit with "1979" by Smashing Pumpkins. Never was a massive fan of this song until I saw it with that scene.

And also, "Everything" by Alanis Morrisette in the closing scenes.
