Getting a car might seem the easiest way to get from place to place but the effect that has on our environment and pollution levels is shocking. Air pollution is linked to early deaths of about 40,000 people a year in the UK and can cause asthma or even heart and lung disease. According to data in just January alone of 2018, the UK had already reached its air pollution limits for the whole entire year.

I recently went to visit Venice where there transport is so good for the environment due to most people travelling by boat or water taxis. This was such an experience because it is so different to the UK where there is so much pollution from cars, lorry’s and buses. Going to Venice was an inspiring city seeing people queuing up for water taxis like buses and walking to admire their beautiful city. German cities have said they are going to trail free public transport to cut pollution, hoping people find a more sustainable way to travel. Pollution doesn’t just affect the local area of Kingston and the UK but “life-threatening” pollution affects more than 130 cities in Europe causing some 400,000 deaths, costing 20 billion euros in health spending per year.

This can be reduced by travelling on foot, catching a train or even just car sharing; all these little things can really make a difference to the environment we live in and fight against dangerous pollution and the air we breathe in every day.
