Teens nowadays are using social media a lot. The average person will spend almost 2 hours a day on social media, which gives the total of 5 years, 4 months in an average lifetime. The total time that is spent on social media beats time that is spent drinking, eating, socialising and grooming.
People tend to in general spend the most time on YouTube, about 40 minutes a day. They also spend approximately 35 minutes on Facebook, 25 minutes on Snapchat, 15 minutes on Instagram and 1 minute on Twitter.
It is predicted that, soon, people will be spending more time on their phones and on social media than they will watching TV.
A survey asked 14-24 year olds living in the UK how social media platforms impacted their wellbeing and health. The survey showed that Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook all led to increased feelings of depression, loneliness, anxiety and poor body image.
All these negative things could happen because children are starting to use technology from younger ages. As they get older, this will impact their lives and probably their social skills, because more time is spent communicating with people online or through social media than in person.
