On the 28th April, students from Gumley House School will be taking part in their first training process for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Duke of Edinburgh helps many young adults to find their path for the future. It gives them a chance to learn how to be more independent so when they are older they can learn for themselves. They will be learning how to do this by finding volunteer work for themselves. They will be learning a new skill, this will help them in the future to have more qualities. In order to complete the award you also need to take part in a physical activity and finally the expedition which will include staying in a tent over the weekend and finding your own way with a group to a certain destination using only a map and a compass.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was founded by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1956 in the united kingdom

Regardless of ability, it gives anyone a chance to prove themselves from ages 14-21. Its an opportunity to experience challenge and adventure, to pick up new skills on your way and make loads of new friends. The Award takes part in 140 countries, as the Duke of Edinburgh’s international Award.

You can pick up many skills from the Award such as leadership, perseverance, team work and communication. These types of skills are what jobs and universities are looking for in their candidates. When they see you have achieved this you stand outfrom the other opponents. Former student from Sheffield University said ‘it was hard but my team persevered and made it, I am pleased because I have made it as far as Uni and it really helped having completed the Award as I stood out of the crowd.’
