Woman Jailed for stealing £31,000 from an elderly woman that she worked with at a care home

On 4th October carer Monica Watson, 46, from Cobham was found guilty of fraud for stealing £31,000 from an 85-year-old woman that she was supposed to be caring for. The money was taken by Watson using the victims credit and debit cards and set up new accounts without the permission from the elderly woman. The thievery itself occurred between October 2015 and May 2016, and only stopped when Watson was caught in June 2016, after the victim’s relatives noticed the large amounts of money being regularly withdrawn. The taken money was being used for frequent lunches, clothes, tennis practises, and even holidays to Portugal and various locations across Great Britain.  Upon being arrested Watson was trailed guilty for abusing her position as a carer and for 7 counts of fraud at Kingston Crown Court, were the jury declared her guilty of all charges and remained in custody until her sentencing; she has been jailed for 3 years. The leader of the investigation Detective gave a statement Sargent Ben Kirby: “This was a calculated and cold crime committed with no sense of remorse, and done to fund a lifestyle Ms Watson thought she deserved though did not have the income to lead. Watson is a callous individual who continues to lie and deceive and appears to have no intention of changing her ways. In 2010, she spent eight months in prison for a similar offence of theft.” The family of the victim stated she had been “really rocked” by the events and stated: “She keeps asking ‘how could I have been so foolish to believe her.’” According to the Surrey Police, Watson showed no signs of remorse about her actions.
