Is it deliberately ignored that women’s football is less publicised than men’s?

It’s a common misconception that women are ‘bad at football’ but this is because they don’t have as many chances, to showcase their talent in mainstream media, as men do. For example, Championship male players have many televised games compared to their female compatriots even though they are of the same skill level, only premier league women’s games are shown on tv, even that is scarce. The money in women’s football is also highly scarce with a women’s Super League season ticket costing on average ‘£32.38’ whereas a men’s Premier League season ticket costing ‘£508.55’.

Most people turn on the tv and expect to see men’s football because it is more widely known and has a lot more money invested in it. Not just in tv, but in football magazines there is no publicity for women’s football. I know at least one football magazine that is targeted towards younger boys as to younger girls which changes the mindset of any girl that may want to play. The magazine advertises sports kit and all the models are males which doesn’t suggest they are even trying to make women’s football more popular.

Having no women in football magazines means that young female players don’t have as many chances to find a role model or aspire to be like someone. This makes the boys feel welcome as they have many players to look up to but the girls feel excluded because they don’t have the same.
