After the historic match, grassroots team Sutton United against premier league heavyweights Arsenal, many were left stunned. Awestruck by how Sutton had not lost 10 nil; astonished by the shameful behaviour of Sutton’s goal keeper; aghast at the spoils of litter and glass after the game.

In the words of an anonymous speaker it was consequence of the ‘hooligans’ who ‘don’t care for the local residents’. Many would not go to this extreme to illustrate the owners of the general rubbish littering the pavement in the vicinity that morning. However, as I inspected the shattered razors of glass, plastic cups rolling like tumbleweed and wrappers with remnants of the celebrations of the previous night- it became clear this behaviour was truly unacceptable.

Food Trucks were in business yet not a single sign reminded fans to dispose of their litter responsibly. A bin adjacent to the food truck table and entrance to the recreation ground, were the only visible signs of propriety.

I implore fans when celebrating be aware of the local environment and community as the ashes remain only for us to clean up.
