The Liberal Democrat MP Amna Ahmed recently paid to a visit to Nonsuch High School.  Not only did she answer any questions that the students asked but she actively encouraged all young girls to become more politically aware. The session was particularly useful to government and politics students who gained a lot from speaking directly to an MP, rather than just reading the manifesto.   Many questions were asked about the current political climate, specific Liberal Democrat policies and women in politics.

Currently, women are hugely underrepresented in the houses of Parliament. Amna Ahmed is one of just 191 female MPs; this is only 29% of all MPs. The students collectively agreed on the importance of all social groups being represented in politics and many were both shocked and disappointed at the low level of representation for females. As students, we found it extremely motivational and inspirational to see a young women climbing up the political ladder.

One year 12 politics student commented: “It was so inspiring to see a woman follow the career path of my dreams; it has inspired me to become more active towards achieving my goals. Also, she represents an ethnic minority group which is even more inspiring as they are even more underrepresented.”

Amna Ahmed emphasised to all the students the importance of being ambitious and motivated. After listening to her talk, there was a positive atmosphere amongst the students and teachers. Not only was the visit academically inspiring, it also gave the young girls hope that a more equal and representative society could be created.
