Averna Awakens, by Francesca Foster

Taking the place of the previous Claygate classic, the Greek vine, this new Italian restaurant has ‘a lot to live up to’, as one former Claygate resident refers to the former Greek Vine  as a ‘hard act to follow’. Opened in November, the first night was packed and buzzing with  clear, excited anticipation from the  locals. Situated in St Leonards road, it can be found directly alongside fellow restaurant, the Jolshiri. This Indian restaurant has a solid four star rating, proving some tough competition for the new Averna. Averna is not the first Italian restaurant to grace the small village of Claygate and it is debatable whether it'll be the most favoured, following Il Corallo’s popular debut in 2004. This restaurant ,however, has since closed, leaving Averna to be the sole Italian cuisine in the village.

The restaurant is part of a small chain with  another Averna being part of the  local cuisine in East Molsey for almost 20 years.  Averna believes that they offer a real authentic Italian atmosphere and their menu is a mixture of delicious home made dishes, comprising sumptuous salads, perfect pizzas and picturesque pasta. Sourcing from local suppliers, Averna’s daily ritual includes freshly assembling all of their bread and pasta every morning, every day of the week. They truly believe that, within their food, the love and attention that goes into preparation can be truly tasted and appreciated.  With inspiration taken from the Italian way of living, the atmosphere is carefree and pleasant for all. Reviews so far have been nothing but positive, with one diner describing the food as ‘a real taste of Italy’ and another commenting that ‘it is truly delicious’. Averna also do a tasty takeaway menu, combined with free delivery; perfect for those cosy nights in!

Being an Italian myself, I am looking forward to enjoying some of their delicious dishes in the New Year!
