A teenager charged with harassing David Askew, who died following a confrontation outside his home, was remanded in custody when he appeared in court.

Kial Cottingham, 18, appeared for a brief hearing at Tameside Magistrates' Court and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Cottingham, of Sylvester Way, Hattersley was remanded for three days so police could talk to him about other offences.

Mr Askew, 64, who had learning difficulties, collapsed and died outside his end-terrace property in Melandra Crescent, Hattersley, on Wednesday evening.

Neighbours and police said he had been targeted by yobs for years.

A post-mortem examination yesterday proved inconclusive.

Mary Crompton, chairman of the bench in court, sent Cottingham back to police custody until Wednesday after hearing police wanted to talk to him about other alleged offences.

It is alleged Cottingham harassed Mr Askew in a series of incidents between January 25 and the night he died.

No date was given for the next court hearing.
