Women's rugby takes centre stage

2:28pm Monday 26th July 2010

The sixth IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup kick-off in Guildford, Surrey, on August 20.

Twelve nations from around the globe will compete for the ultimate prize in Women’s Rugby.

To mark the occasion, Twickenham Stadium’s World Rugby Museum is running a special exhibition to tell story of the tournament since its inaugural championship in 1991.

This exhibition will profile each of the competing teams, the venues, and tournament structure for England 2010, providing the perfect introduction to the forthcoming festival of sport.

It will relay the story of the Women’s World Cup since its inaugural championship in 1991 and document the subsequent great games and tournament winning sides.

It examines the roots of the women’s game, recalling Emily Valentine, a little known Irish girl who is fast accruing the type of mythology that has seen her dubbed the ‘female Webb-Ellis’.

It also talks about the type of resistance that drove the sport underground in the first part of the 20th Century, and the pioneering spirit that returned it and brought it to mainstream acceptance.

The exhibition will also document the little known sport of Barette that was closely related to rugby and became popular in 1920s France.

Finally the exhibition will take a look at what is involved in a Rugby World Cup from the point of view of a player, in the ‘Player’s Experience’ section.

A variety of iconic posters, objects and images from the earliest days of the game, and previous World Cups will be on show, including the IRB World Cup itself, which will be housed within the exhibition until it is presented to the winner on September 5 at the Twickenham Stoop.

The exhibition opens on August 12 and will runs until Spring 2011. Entry to the World Rugby Museum costs £6 for adults and £4 for concessions.
