Harlequins director of rugby Conor O’Shea has admitted new signing Mathew Luamanu has work ahead of him to become a game changer at the Stoop.

The 27-year-old, former New Zealand U20 Junior World Cup winner, pitched up in west London last Friday from Guinness Pro 12 side Benetton Treviso.

And O’Shea believes he can get up to speed - even though it may take some time.

“In any squad you are always looking for a point of difference and we have no doubt Mat can provide that,” he said.

“He needs to work hard through this pre-season, but I’m confident that will happen given his motivations .

“Mat’s sheer size, power and footballing ability will provide a very interesting challenge to opposition in the Premiership and in Europe.

"His best years can be ahead of him.”

Luamanu made 22 appearances for Benetton Treviso last term after arriving in Italy having gspent the previous two seasons with Japanes side Kyuden Voltex.

The six foot four inch 127kg forward, who played alongside Quins fly half Ben Botica at North Harbour, has represented New Zealand Schools, won the 2008 Junior World Cup with New Zealand U20s and has Super 15s experience with The Blues.

He added: “I’m really excited to have joined Harlequins and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead while beginning a new chapter.

“Harlequins’ style of play is known throughout Europe and that was something that really appealed to me.

“It’s a long pre-season, so there is a lot of work to do but I’ve enjoyed it so far and I’m looking forward to getting some game time under my belt.”

Meanwhile, Quins number eight Nick Easter has rejoined the England squad preparing for the World Cup after missing the recent training camp in Denver due to injury.
