Sutton & Epsom Jeff Parsons declared that his side has finally clicked after a first win in London Division One South.

Saturday’s 65-24 win at Gosport & Fareham was Parsons’ first success in three games, and the head coach admitted it was a relief to finally put a tick in the win column.

Parsons said: “We should have won the first two games of the season, but silly individual mistakes and unforced errors cost us dearly.

“But at Gosport it finally clicked, even though we scored most of our points when we were down to 14 men.”

He added: “But it is nice to get that first win. We’ve had seasons where it took eight games to get the first win and it is squeaky bum time, and of course we had a season where we went without winning game.

“A losing streak can affect the team, so hopefully we can push on from here.”

Parsons has been further boosted by the return from injury of hooker Mickey Pointing, while lynchpin Matt Whitaker – who has been out injured since October – has been training hard with a view to a return within a few weeks.

He said: “Early impressions of the league suggest that anyone can beat anyone, it just depends on what side you can get out there.

“It’s no secret that a club needs a squad of up to 40 first team players if you’re going to make an impact.

“We have been working on that and now we have a decent seconds team. At the moment we have about six first-teamers out injured, but those in the seconds can make the step up.”

He added: “Matt [Whitaker] has been training like a man possessed and getting him back would be immense.”
