London Scottish director of rugby Mike Friday believes the capture of young Alec Coombes is a coup for the club, writes Andy Weston.

The 18-year-old, who agreed a one-year deal this week, was part of Millfield School’s successful Sevens team last season which lifted the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens crown.

Winger Coombes joined the exiles on trial during pre-season and Friday predicts a bright future for him.

“Alec turned heads in the summer and was probably unfortunate not to be picked up by a Premiership academy,” he said.

“We are the beneficiaries and since Alec joined us on trial during pre-season, he has settled in very well.

“His work ethic, desire and willingness to learn is great to see. I know the Scotland U20 coaches are following his progress, so he has a lot to play for over the coming months.

“It’s now a case of taking the opportunities which come his way.”

Scottish, 36-30 winners over Bedford Blues last week, have named fellow new signing Chris Walker in their squad travelling to Bristol tomorrow night.

The 28-year-old former New Zealand U21 back rower switched to the Athletic Ground this week from Australian club side Cottesloe having left Doncaster Knights in the summer.

“This is a really talented group of players who are keen to do well. Bristol will be a huge test for me but I’ve had a good training week and I cannot wait.”
