11:36am Friday 6th January 2012 in Rosslyn Park By Graham Moody
Jan Bonney has warned his Rosslyn Park players the time for celebration is over and the hard work starts now, writes Graham Moody.
Park will have spent most of the three-week Winter break happily looking at the National One table, which sees them sit third and in the middle of the promotion mix after a run of seven consecutive wins.
Ealing Trailfinders lead the way with 64 points, with Jersey and Park one point further back and Fylde on 60, leading to what should be an exciting promotion race for the second-half of the season.
But while head coach Bonney is more than happy with the first four months of the campaign, he has warned the hard work begins again as they start a difficult January by hosting Cambridge on Saturday.
“It should be a good second half to season and we are definitely looking forward to it,” he said.
“We have worked hard this year so far and now it is about continuing that.
“It is tight at the top but, as we have said all year, there are a lot of good sides all through the league.
“It is the sides near the bottom or in the middle of the table that can trip you up so we need to be at our best for them too and caution is the way we are looking at it.
“January is going to be a difficult month for us and we need to kick off this year with a win as we have Cambridge at home this Saturday, then Jersey away and Tynedale at home – they are all difficult games.
“We lost to Cambridge at the start of the year and they are more than capable of putting in a good performance and they are going to be very competitive.
“But it is a good focus for everyone to have after the break.”
One of the reasons for Park’s success so far this year has been the strength of their squad, which has allowed Bonney to interchange players and have confidence in those he brought in to cover injuries.
And he hopes the competition for places will continue to keep everyone on their toes.
“It is going to be a strong second half to the season and we have a lot of boys putting their hands up and wanting to play for the first team,” he added.
“For us, it is a case of trying to manage the squad.
“There are always going to be a few disappointed guys but we have to keep them happy and so far we have – everyone is happy and has built in to what we are doing here.
“We will hopefully get a few players coming back from injury too, which will add to competition.”
