Quins director of rugby Conor O'Shea moved quickly to secure the services of two of the club's brightest young forwards.

Academy graduates Charlie Matthews and Sam Twomey, who have impressed many this term, both agreed contract extensions this week to remain in the Harlequins second row on a long-term basis.

Matthews, who made his senior Quins debut in 2009, made his 100th appearance in the the Big Game 8 draw with Gloucester and the 24-year-old was a part of Sunday's 24-20 win at Worcester Warriors.

Twomey, 23, is approaching his half century of appearances since playing his first senior match for the club in 2011.

He will have to wait until March to add to his haul of 37 club caps having recently had surgery to on an injury suffered against London Irish last month

The pair have both partnered former Australia skipper James Horwill in the scrum's engine room this season and O'Shea is confident they will go on to play key roles for the Premiership title chasers.

"The club is incredibly fortunate to have two players of Charlie and Sam's ability who still have so much growth and potential in them at 24 and 23 respectively," he said.

"Alongside the other tight five forwards at the Club I am sure they will learn and thrive from the presence of James Horwill and these two young men will be the corner stone of this club for years to come.”

Matthews and Twomey were typically pleased to commit to the club, with the former adding: "To have made my 100th appearance recently was a huge honour and I'm looking forward to continuing to learn and develop as part of this incredibly talented group for the coming years.”
