Scrum half Danny Care hopes England put a smile back on the face of English rugby as England finished their Rugby World Cup campaign with a thumping ten-try win over Uruguay at the Manchester City stadium.

Despite disappointing losses to Wales and Australia, England finished Pool A on a high with a comprehensive 60-3 mauling of the south Americans.

Topping the scoring charts were Jack Nowell and veteran Nick Easter with three apiece while Anthony Watson grabbed two, Henry Slade one with a penalty try also awarded in an emphatic victory.

And Care, who made his World Cup debut in the match, believes England repaid the fans who cheered their every move in Manchester.

"It was obviously not the circumstances that I would have liked my first game to be in but we wanted to go and put a smile on a few people's faces," he said.

"I thought from the minute we stepped inside the stadium the fans were unbelievable. From minute one to minute eighty, they cheered us on and we owed them a big performance. We owed ourselves a big performance.

"Fair play to Uruguay they are a ferocious team who fight for everything, but we'll take the win."

He added: "Obviously people are very disappointed that we haven't got through to the quarter-finals, none more so than the players in that dressing room, but all we could do is go out there and throw the ball around and try and enjoy ourselves."

Uruguay were actually first on the scoreboard with a Felipe Berchesi penalty in the first minute after England were caught offside.

But it didn't take long for the home side to get on the scoreboard.

The first try came from Anthony Watson who won the race to a Jack Nowell nudge ahead, following a superb flat pass fired by Henry Slade. It was England's 1,500th try in Test match rugby and Owen Farrell kicked the conversion.

The first of Nick Easter's tries came next when he emerged clutching the ball at the bottom of a driving maul from the line out. Farrell was on target once more.

Easter added his second score soon after as he followed a Danny Care snipe around the fringes to finish from a few yards out.

The home side enjoyed the lion's share of possession and territory, but failed to add a further score before half time with Uruguay's defence holding firm.

However, centre and captain Santiago Vilaseca was sent to the sin bin after failing to roll away quick enough from the tackle area.

England roared out of the blocks in the second half with Watson on the end of an excellent set move, involving George Ford and Alex Goode, to seal the bonus point.

Next over was Henry Slade on his Rugby World Cup debut. He charged down an attempted box kick, then hacked on to finish.

He was soon joined on the scoresheet by his fellow Exeter Chief Jack Nowell, who finished off a move between full back Goode and Care.

The 37-year old Easter completed his hat trick on what may be his final appearance in a white shirt as he steered a dominant driving maul over the line.

England's eighth try came through Nowell as Ford floated a lovely pass over the top of the Uruguayan defence to give the England wing an easy run in.

Nowell was soon over for his third – this time an outside break from replacement Jonathan Joseph and a sublime offload to Slade making space for Nowell to finish.

Cruelly for the visitors, referee Chris Pollock finished the game on a penalty try following a deliberate offside as England were about to cross the try line again.

The victory will be scant consolation to England who will now return to their clubs for the start of the Premiership season next week.
