Yorkshire Carnegie and England Sevens scrum-half Sam Egerton has joined Harlequins on a short-term deal with immediate effect.

The 24-year-old arrives as injury cover for scrum half Karl Dickson as director of rugby Conor O'Shea's squad is stretched in the absence of five England stars, Wales centre Jamie Roberts and crocked fly half Nick Evans.

“We are delighted to be able to bring Sam on board on a short term basis. He is talented and ambitious and I am looking forward to his period with us," said O'Shea.

Egerton, a graduate of Oxford University, has played in four consecutive Varsity matches and became the first player since 1925 to score in three consecutive games in the series.

Between January and April 2015, Sam made 11 appearances for Yorkshire Carnegie in the Greene King IPA Championship, scoring seven tries, before agreeing a contract with England Sevens.
