Richmond lived to fight for National Division One top spot another day, but director of rugby Steve Hill wants his men to learn their lesson, writes Stuart Amos.

The Athletic Ground outfit went down 27-21 to second-placed Hartpury College, but remained top of the table by virtue of the losing bonus point gained having been 15-0 down at one stage.

Tries from James Allcock, Ronnie MacLean-Dents and a penalty try saw the hosts lead 21-20 only to concede a second half penalty try themselves.

Richmond will be bouyed by the fact the point was achieved without influential number eight Chris Davies.

“I was incredibly pleased by how well we fought back in the second half and with a tad more fortune we could have stolen the game at the end,” said Hill.

“However, against opposition as good as this you cannot give away two soft tries and needless penalties and gain the outcome you want.”

Richmond end 2015 at Rosslyn Park tomorrow.
