The importance of Saturday’s win over Australia was not lost on Chris Robshaw, but the England captain insists no one in the Red Rose camp will be popping champagne corks any time soon.

With next year’s World Cup fast approaching England hosted the Wallabies at Twickenham knowing the game represented the final chance to beat one of the southern hemisphere giants before the Webb Ellis Cup is up for grabs.

Robshaw and co duly delivered when it mattered most, Ben Morgan grabbing two tries and George Ford kicking 16 points as England won 26-17.

But Robshaw does not want anyone getting carried away just yet, the flanker adamant there is still plenty of work to be done.

“I’m extremely pleased,” said Robshaw.

“To finish with a good win over a top southern hemisphere side is hugely pleasing from all the guys.

“There were some outstanding performances from the guys, they really stood up and did what was needed to be done for the good of the side.

“For us it was very much about winning, if we had lost we would have looked back over this QBE series and seen that we had lost three games out of four it would have been tough to take, especially being here at home.

“We know it’s not all smelling of roses and there are still areas to work on and improvements still to be made, but I’m extremely pleased with the win and it is a huge relief to finish like that.

“We all know we didn’t start the autumn well, for whatever reason, things didn’t go quite as we would have liked.

"We feel we are back where we need to be, but it is about going up and up a gear.

“They stretched us quite a lot in defence and really tested us – credit to them they kept the ball alive.

“On the face of it we always knew it was going to be tough, but it was great to finish like this and it will give us confidence ahead of the Six Nations now and a nice trip to Cardiff.”

For Robshaw the game with Australia also pitted him against opposite number Michael Hooper, the Australian captain thought to be one of the best opensides around.

But it was England’s captain who came out on top in their personal battle, although Robshaw was quick to praise his fellow forwards in helping him triumph.

“It’s always a challenge when you are playing against the best opensides in the world and every week there is a different battle coming your way,” he added.

“Michael Hooper is extremely quick over the floor, but you always enjoy those challenges and that is the great thing about playing these types of teams, throughout the whole side there are key match-ups and hopefully you want to be on top.

“I’m extremely pleased with how the front five have gone throughout the series, I think they have all put their hand up extremely well and potentially got us out of trouble at times and turned the screw at times.

“Let’s be frank about it, we have played some of the best packs in world rugby over the last four weeks.”
