The summer season may be over for Ewell Village’s hurdling star Shona Richards, but that does not mean she has stopped winning titles.

Richards, 19, won the 400m hurdles silver at the IAAF World Junior Championship in July, where her time of 56.16 seconds ranked her the fastest U20 in the discipline of all time.

While Richards has put in the hours to succeed on the track, she had no input in her latest accolades – two prizes at the Epsom & Ewell Sports Awards.

Not only did Richards win young sports personality of the year, the English U20 champion and former pupil of Glyn School also took home the sports personality of the year.

She said: “I was at the awards last year and did not win anything, and this time round I was thinking ‘Well, you never know’.

“I was amazed when I won the first one, and was so proud to collect the award.

“Then when my nomination was read out for the second one, I thought I cannot win this, and then they read out my mind and I was really surprised.”

She added: “The whole evening was really good, and there were so many young athletes, volunteers and coaches who all deserved recognition.

“The talk Martin [Henlan – guest speaker] gave was really motivating and quite moving, and that set the theme for the whole evening.

“It was great to see just how many sports are well represented in the area, until they are all in one room, you have no idea.”

Richards is taking a gap year ahead of starting university, and while she hopes to travel sometime between now and Christmas – she knows the athletics comes first.

She said: “The summer season may be over, but I am training up to six times a week.

“I want to compete in as many international competitions as I can next year.

“I did that last year, but as a junior, and now as a senior it is important that I get as much experience as possible.”

More prizes may follow as Richards and the other winners the Epsom & Ewell Sports Awards have been put forward for the Active Surrey Sports Awards at Kempton Racecourse on December 2.
