Twickenham race ace Mitchell Gilbert is looking forward to being a GP3 series front runner.

The 20-year-old Australian has signed a deal to drive for 2014 team and driver’s championship winners Carlin after spending much of last season at the back of the grid with Trident.

And Gilbert, backed by ADD Motorsports, cannot wait to get behind the wheel for a official testing in March.

“I’m really excited. They won the drivers’ and team awards last year, so I’m in the best place.

“I know the car is going to be fast and that I should be in the mix, so after a difficult few years I just want to get out there and do it. I’ll be able to let my driving do the talking again.

“I can’t wait to get properly started with them.”

He added: “They have so much experience and are so professional, just being in their workshop last week was an eye-opener. It’s on a different level.

“Their mentality is they are going to win and it makes you feel the same. It’s not about having a mountain to climb, it’s a process to them.

“But I’m not setting myself any targets this year, I just want to get out there and enjoy my racing again – and see where it goes from there.”
