Banstead driver Matt Flowers had a lucky escape when his second race of the GT5 Challenge G40 Championship at Oulton Park ended in a high-speed smash.

The 24-year-old had enjoyed a good start to his first weekend in the G40 class, having taken fifth in race one – the highest placed newcomer.

However, it all went wrong in race two when the former Sutton Grammar School pupil was spun and a rival drove head-on into his car at 60mph.

Flowers, who was unharmed, described it as his worst crash yet. He said: “I got spun round and ended up stationary facing the wrong direction.

“I got hit head-on, which span me again and then I was hit up the back.

“I was a bit shaken up but physically I am fine. “I had a sore neck and back for a couple of days, but that is it.

“The car is a mess, it was only just short of a write-off. It’s a real shame because things were going well in terms of pace.

“I am pretty sure we’ll be in place for Rockingham in May, but the extra cost of repairs might mean I cannot complete the season.

“It will go into thousands of pounds unfortunately."
