The budding sports stars of Wandsworth will be gathering next month for the annual sports awards, with high hopes it could be a small step to bigger things.

Nominations for the Active Wandsworth Awards, which take place on February 11, have been announced with the words of last year’s host from Sky Sports presenter ringing in their ears.

David Garrido, who returns to host proceedings this year, told a packed civic hall that “Nights like this are absolutely huge, people need to be recognised and rewarded and to be shown that all the effort they put in is worth it.

“This may only be a small step, but it might lead to much greater things.”

In the run up to the big night, the Wandsworth Guardian will be previewing some of those nominated for the 11 categories that recognise the talented sportspeople, dedicated volunteers and coaches and successful clubs in the borough.

Nominees for the community sports team of the year include Balham Blazers U17s, Herne Hill Harriers distance team and Spencer hockey club girls' U12s team.

Nominees for the schools sports team of the year include Ernest Bevin’s successful judo programme, Penwortham Primary School's football team, and Putney High Schools rowing team.

Paul McCue, managing director of Enable Leisure & Culture saying, said: “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise the success, achievements and dedication of athletes, volunteers, coaches and teams across Wandsworth in 2015.”
