Surbiton Hockey Club were the big winners at the Elmbridge Sports Personality of the Year Awards last week.

Ladies’ head coach Brett Garrard was named coach of the year, while his first team squad – who won the Women’s Hockey League Premier Division title, the Women’s Cup and finished fifth in Europe last season – were crowned the senior sports team of the year.

The Sugden Road outfit claimed the Mike Burgess sports club of the year award at the ceremony at Danes Hill School in Oxshott last Friday.

Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier Pippa Earley, a student at Notre Dame School, Cobham, was second to Walton Athletics Club’s discus specialist Sophie Mace in the youth sports personality of the year category.

Mace has now claimed the award three times and this year’s gong was reward for her domination of the U17 girls age group in the discus this summer.

Molesey Boat Club president Ian Knight claimed the Mayor’s award, while Molesey rower Gabby Rodriguez shared the senior sports personality of the year with Walton Xcel Walking Football Club’s Mark Blythe.

Cobham’s Mikael Undrom claimed the inclusive sports award for his exploits in Special Olympics athletics, golf and skiing.

Mace, Surbiton Hockey Club and Knight are all on the short-list for the Surrey Sports Awards in December.
