Head coach Todd Williams says his men are fighting tooth and nail to emulate the club’s ladies’ league and cup double triumph of last year.

Williams’ side battled back from 2-0 down against league leaders East Grinstead on Saturday, to lead 3-2 – through a Matt Daly double and one from Alan Forsyth – only to concede an equaliser with 41 seconds left on the clock.

Surbiton – who trail East Grinstead by one point in the table with a game in hand – then secured a Men’s Cup semi-final trip to Cannock on March 22 with a penalty stroke win over Beeston on Sunday.

Forsyth struck twice to again haul Surbiton back from 2-0 down to level matters before keeper David Kettle saved the crucial fourth shoot out strike to allow Forsyth to fire home the decisive score.

Ladies captain Sarah Haycroft lifted the WHL Premier Division championship trophy and Women’s Cup in 2014 and Williams knows his side has the chance to match that feat.

“We’ve got a ticket to the competition and we are doing everything we can to do it,” said Williams.

“There is a really positive vibe at the club at the moment and the two teams get on very well.

“There is no other club in the country in this position.

“The reality is if we win every game between now and the end of the season we will win the league and cup.

“The boys are very aware there is a tremendous opportunity in front of them.”

Jo Hunter fired home a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining as the club’s unbeaten ladies beat Leicester 2-1 in the WHL Premier Division to remain top of the table from Clifton.
