Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier Mae Thompson secured a 400 metre hurdles silver medal as Surrey lifted the English School Athletics Championships team title on Sunday, writes Stuart Amos.

The 18-year-old former Hinchley Wood School student clocked 61.72 seconds to finish 0.68 secs behind senior girls champion Georgina Rogers and only 0.04 secs ahead of third placed Claire Robertson.

Surrey won the senior boys, intermediate girls and intermediate boys age groups as they collected 353 points overall from 98 finals to lift the Broadbridge Trophy ahead of Essex (342) and Kent (304.5).

Kingston’s Phoebe Law finished fourth in the senior girls 1,500m final in 4:24.91, and it was the same agonising result for Mollie O’Sullivan in the junior girls 1,500m as she missed a medal by just 0.22secs.

Pippa Earley was knocked out of the junior girls 75m hurdles at the semi-final stage, Laura Darcey finished 12th in the intermediate girls high jump and Rhianna Reynolds was 14th in the junior girls long jump.
