Some of Great Britain’s best young squash players will descend on the Roehampton Club this weekend.
The Roehampton Club University Cup, now in its third year, has received fast-track recognition by British Universities Colleges and Sport (Bucs) and will see a broad spectrum of higher education students given the opportunity to compete for their university.
Due to the success of previous years, the event has been expanded to two days over this coming weekend, with 16 universities now taking part instead of the previous eight at the club in Roehampton Lane.
Durham University were last year’s winners and will return to defend their title while two-time British champion Peter Nicol MBE, who helped launch the event, has been so encouraged by its progress he will speak at a gala dinner and also play a special exhibition match.
“The interest shown by the universities and Bucs endorsement and support is extremely exciting,” said the club’s head squash professional Paul Lindsay.
“We are going to be very careful to grow the event and not get ahead of ourselves.
“But the great feedback from all the participants and supporters has shown we are on the right track.”
