Sutton United chairman Bruce Elliott is going to treasure the National League South title because these days “don’t come along very often”.

Saturday’s 2-0 win over Chelmsford City was enough to clinch the championship with a match to spare.

That match is at Oxford City on Saturday, but for the moment, Elliott is enjoying the sweet taste of success and champagne.

He said: “These days need to be treasured. They don't come along very often and when they do you need to enjoy them. The scenes today [Saturday] will be remembered forever.

SUTTON UNITED: Emotional Doswell hails best ever achievement in football

A Sutton United Front: National League South champions... now that has a lovely ring to it

“We've been on such a good run and played such lovely football. To be 14 points behind and then suddenly winning it with a game to go is unbelievable. It's what dreams are made of.

“I am absolutely delighted for Paul and the players. We have played some of the best football I've ever seen at this club.

“It's been a pleasure to watch, they are a great bunch of lads who all get on really well together and it shows on the pitch.”

He added: “Playing the National League will be different - there are some real quality clubs in that division.

“The fact that we will be going to Tranmere Rovers and possibly Grimsby is unbelievable because they are proper football clubs.

“There are a lot of ex-Football League clubs in that division and how nice is it that little Sutton United will be among them.”
